What is a cookie?
An "Internet Cookie" (also known as a "browser cookie", "HTTP cookie" or simply "cookie") is a small file of letters and numbers that will be stored on your computer, mobile device or other equipment from which you access the Internet.
A cookie is installed by a request issued by a web-server to a browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome) and, although it is stored on the equipment (computer, mobile terminal, etc.) used to access Internet pages, it cannot access other information on that device and cannot contain software, viruses or spyware.
The cookie stores important information that enhances the web browsing experience (e.g.: settings of the language in which you want to access a site; keeping a user logged into a webmail account; online banking security; keeping products in your shopping cart).
In most cases cookies do not process personal data when used and do not identify the users of web pages.
A cookie consists of 2 parts: the name and the content or value of the cookie.
What are the main categories of cookies?
In terms of the duration of their existence, there are two categories of cookies:
- Session cookies: these are stored temporarily in the web browser's cookie folder so that the browser remembers them until the user leaves the website or closes the browser window.
- Permanent/persistent cookies: These types of cookies are stored on the hard drive of the equipment used to access a website and are not deleted when the browsing session is closed. They are retained and reused each time the user returns to that website, but can be deleted at any time by the user, and have predefined validity periods.
From the point of view of the operator placing cookies, there is:
- first party cookies - placed by the owner of the website visited
- third party cookies - placed by the operator of a website other than the one you visit. These third parties must also comply with applicable law and the privacy policies of the owner of the website on which they place cookies.
Details on the typology and description of all known types of cookies can be found by following this link: https://cookiepedia.co.uk
In terms of the purposes for which cookies are placed, there are usually the following categories of cookies: strictly necessary, for analysis and improvement of website performance, functional and promotional (targeting and advertising).
What types of cookies does the BT Asset Management website use?
The BT Asset Management website uses session and permanent cookies, as well as its own cookies or cookies placed by third parties, for the following purposes:
Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are necessary for the functioning of the website and cannot be disabled in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions taken by visitors to this website requesting various services, such as setting privacy preferences, logging in or completing forms. In the browser they use, visitors (users) can set their browser to block or warn them about these cookies, but in this case, certain parts of the site may not work.
These types of cookies are exempt from the rule of obtaining consent for their placement.
Measurement, analysis and performance cookies
These cookies allow us to count visits to the website and traffic sources so that we can measure and improve its performance. In this way we can find out which pages are the most popular to discover which products and services are of interest to website visitors. All the information that these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies, we will not know when a particular IP address visited the website. Using applications such as Google Analytics or Adform, we collect anonymous data about visits to the website, such as pages viewed, duration of viewing, entry page to the website.
Functional cookies
These cookies help us to provide you with enhanced functionality and a personalised experience on our website, such as live chat. If you do not allow these cookies, some services may not function properly.
Promotion cookies
These cookies are set on the website based on agreements we have with our advertising partners (e.g. Social Media pages, Google, Adform etc). With the help of these cookies, we and our partners can observe and analyse which types of products on the website a particular visitor has shown an interest in and, on a subsequent visit to the BT website or another website, we will display advertising to that visitor based on the product they have shown an interest in on the BT Asset Management website. This type of promotion is called targeted advertising. If you do not allow advertising cookies, it does not mean that advertising will not be delivered to you on other pages, but that the advertisements that will be shown to you will be less relevant to you as an internet user.
If you would like to learn more about how cookies work in relation to online advertising, please visit http://www.youronlinechoices.com/ro/.
